Composite copper foilIt refers to a thin film material with a polymer material as the intermediate layer and metal copper as the coating on both sides. At present, the main routes for the intermediate layer of composite copper foil include PET, PP, and PI. Different polymer materials have different properties, so their downstream application scenarios also vary.

PET, PP, and PI have their own advantages and disadvantages when used as base film materials for composite copper foils: PET has the best comprehensive performance, but it is not acid or alkali resistant and is easily soluble in electrolytes; PP has a low density and a higher upper limit for weight reduction of the current collector, which significantly improves the energy density of the battery; PI has the best performance, but the cost is relatively high. Specifically, PET material has strong toughness, good thermal performance, and electrical insulation, and is commonly used in the production of heat shrink films, anti-static films, high gloss films, reflective films, chemical coating films, and other materials;
The outstanding advantage of PP material lies in its stable chemical properties, which are commonly used in the production of various chemical pipelines and their accessories; PI material has outstanding performance, with strong heat resistance, electrical insulation, and excellent mechanical properties, but the cost is high. It is mainly used in various fields such as aviation, navigation, spacecraft, rocket missiles, atomic energy, and electronic and electrical industries.

Composite copper foilThe advantages in safety performance, raw material cost, and improvement of battery energy density are obvious, which is in line with the development direction of lithium battery current collectors. Composite copper foil uses polymer materials to replace some of the metallic copper in traditional copper foil. Compared to copper materials, polymer materials can effectively enhance the toughness and insulation of the current collector, reduce the amount of metallic copper used, and thus reduce the thickness and weight of the current collector, providing more space for positive and negative electrode active materials.

PPComposite copper foilReplacing some copper metal with low-density polymer materials can reduce the weight and thickness of the current collector, thereby improving the energy density of the battery. On the premise of ensuring the conductivity and current collection performance of the conductive layer, composite copper foil can, on the one hand, utilize the toughness and other characteristics of polymer materials to reduce the thickness of the current collector, which not only does not affect the safety performance of the battery but also expands the volume of the positive and negative active materials; On the other hand, it can reduce the weight of the current collector, thereby improving the energy density of the battery.

PETComposite aluminum foil is a material composed of aluminum foil and polymer film, commonly used as the positive electrode current collector in batteries. In lithium batteries, due to the high positive electrode potential, copper foil is easily oxidized at high potentials, while aluminum has a high oxidation potential and a dense oxide film on the surface of the aluminum foil, which also provides good protection for the internal aluminum. Therefore, aluminum foil is commonly used as a positive electrode current collector material. Composite aluminum foil has significantly improved the safety of lithium batteries, and its industrialization process is faster than that of composite copper foil. Short circuit inside the battery is the direct cause of thermal runaway in lithium batteries.
