China is a leading industrial scale country in the global new materials industry. As is well known, the new materials industry is considered the most promising high-tech industry in the 21st century and has a huge impact on future development. New materials are one of the key areas of international competition and a key factor in determining a country's high-end manufacturing and national defense security. New materials are actively being developed globally, especially in developed countries. It is worth mentioning that the new materials industry is one of the seven strategic emerging industries in China and serves as the industrial foundation for the transformation and upgrading of the entire manufacturing industry. The scale of China's new materials industry is approximately 2 trillion yuan. China's new materials industry, especially in traditional fields such as metal materials, textile materials, and chemical materials, has a good foundation. Its production capacity of rare earth functional materials, advanced energy storage materials, photovoltaic materials, organic silicon, superhard materials, special stainless steel, glass fiber and its composite materials ranks among the top in the world. After decades of struggle, China's new materials industry has grown from scratch and continuously expanded, achieving significant achievements in system construction, industrial scale, technological progress, and other aspects. It has made significant contributions to the national economy and defense construction, and has a solid foundation for development. The demand for new materials in China will continue to grow, and its output value will exceed 10 trillion yuan by 2025, with a very broad development prospect! It is worth mentioning that as early as 2011, the total output value of China's new materials industry was only 0.8 trillion yuan. By 2019, the total output value of China's new materials industry had grown to 4.5 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 15.4%. It is expected to exceed 7 trillion yuan by 2021. China has achieved "parallel running" or even "leading" with the international advanced level in some advanced basic materials, key strategic materials, cutting-edge new materials and other fields. For example, in terms of key strategic materials, six types of materials among SMIC's top seven consumables are domestically procured; Nanshan Group's aluminum alloy thick plate has been certified by Boeing and a supply contract has been signed; For example, CSIC's megawatt level rare earth permanent magnet motors have a 50% reduction in volume and a 40% reduction in weight compared to traditional motors; For example, the domestication rate of key equipment materials for the world's first high-temperature gas cooled reactor nuclear power plant with fourth generation nuclear power characteristics exceeds 85%; Liquid metal has achieved preliminary applications in fields such as 3D printing, flexible intelligent machines, and vascular robots.
China's graphene technology is at the forefront of the world. Graphene technology is a cutting-edge technology field that countries around the world are competing to develop, due to its unparalleled characteristics, which play a crucial role in the development of new materials in the future. The 2017 World Graphene Innovation Conference opened in Changzhou, China, which means that China's graphene technology has begun to lead the world. It is worth mentioning that graphene material was first discovered by British scientists. Graphene is known as the thinnest and hardest material in the world, and is known as the "black gold" and "king of new materials". According to reports, the thickness of graphene can reach 200000 times that of a human hair, and its strength is 200 times that of steel. Scientists predict that graphene will be the most important new material of the 21st century, with immeasurable market application prospects. Graphene technology has been listed as a priority material technology for development in many countries around the world. Although China has only been exposed to graphene technology for a few short years, its development momentum is strong, and China has a huge potential market. After years of development, China's artificial crystal materials have become internationally leading in the research of ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals such as barium metaborate and lithium triborate, and have achieved commercialization; The key technical indicators of laser crystals and solar cells have reached the international advanced level, and the cost of photovoltaic power generation has been reduced to below 1 yuan/kWh. China's lithium-ion battery positive and negative electrode materials, electrolytes meet the requirements of small batteries, and key materials such as separators and electrolyte lithium salts replace imports; Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers have significantly narrowed the gap with developed countries. T300 grade carbon fiber has achieved stable production, with a single line capacity increased to 1200t; T700 and T800 grade carbon fibers have achieved mass supply capability and have begun to be applied to aerospace equipment; China has developed copper strip, copper tube casting technology, and copper aluminum composite technology with independent intellectual property rights; China's submarine pipeline steel X65, X70, X80, thick walled marine oil and gas welded pipes, and medium thick plates for chemical ships have all been domestically produced, especially low-cost graphene has begun to be produced and applied to information and communication devices such as touch screens and thermal conductive films. China's breakthroughs in key technological fields and the continuous increase in new material varieties have significantly enhanced its ability to guarantee high-end metal structural materials, new inorganic non-metallic materials, and high-performance composite materials. The self-sufficiency level of advanced polymer materials and special metal functional materials has gradually improved. China has the most complete liquid metal industry chain in the world, from raw materials to manufacturing, from patents to processes, and can already produce zirconium based amorphous alloys on a large scale. Especially in block forming technology, China has mastered the core technology of liquid metal. It is worth mentioning that China has independent intellectual property rights in the three core technologies of material formulation, equipment manufacturing, and forming processes, and is also the only country in the world that can publicly disclose its ability to form large block shaped amorphous metals. Therefore, the development technology of China's bulk amorphous industry has been at the forefront of the world. For another example, the biodegradable pure magnesium bone nail jointly developed by the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and others has obtained the clinical approval from the State Drug Administration, becoming the first biodegradable magnesium based metal medical device product to obtain clinical approval in China and the first pure magnesium III implant in the world.
