Working principle and main types of PDLC liquid crystal dimming film

The key component of dimming glass is the dimming film, also known as Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal, commonly referred to as PDLC, which stands for polymer dispersed liquid crystal. As the name suggests, a dimming film is a type of film that can adjust transparency and light. Its main manifestations are transparent and non transparent (like frosted glass), with transparency controlled by voltage regulation.

Basic principle of LCD dimming film:

1. In the OFF state of the dimming film, the polymer liquid crystal material in the middle is arranged in a disordered state, blocking light from passing through the film, resulting in a milky white opaque state.

2. When the dimming film is in the ON state, the polymer liquid crystal material in the middle of the film is arranged in an orderly manner under the action of an electric field, which allows light to pass through the film. At this time, the effect seen is a transparent and colorless film state.

Intelligent LCD dimming films are mainly divided into two types:

1Fully self-adhesive dimming filmThe process involves injecting a mixed material of liquid crystal/polymer between two transparent conductive films, and then processing it with a composite silicone layer or hardened layer. The dimming film obtained by this method maintains the characteristics of transparency when powered on and atomization when powered off, as well as the advantages of dry direct bonding and dynamic exhaust. Compared to dimming glass, self-adhesive dimming film is lightweight, easy to transport, and quick to install. It can quickly switch between hidden spaces, background walls, and projection curtain walls.

2Laminated LCD dimming filmThis type of dimming film is currently the main form used in the market. It uses PVB or EVA film to process the intelligent dimming film together through the lamination process. The dimming film with laminated technology has more stable performance and longer service life during use.

Daily use of LCD dimming film:

The dimming film should be kept dry during use and avoid being applied in humid and high-temperature environments, otherwise it will cause premature aging; Suggested for indoor partitions, windows, or projection curtain walls with low humidity and small temperature differences. Daily cleaning should not damage the surrounding glass glue.

Dimming film packaging storage:

Regular manufacturers of LCD dimming films generally use packaging methods such as box or roll to protect the film, which can significantly reduce packaging space and facilitate transportation and acceptance; Generally, the sheets are packed in wooden cases. Paper or foam cotton is used to separate each dimming film in the case, which can effectively protect each dimming film from damage. In addition, each dimming film is equipped with corresponding electrodes, controllers, remote controllers, and other supporting products.
