A new type of magnetic semiconductor material can reduce the energy required by computers in data storage processes, and this research has broad application prospects in the development of energy-saving electronic devices.
Research has found that a new type of magnetic semiconductor material may reduce the energy consumption of computers and other electronic devices. At this year's National Sigma West Conference, this research made physicists from South Dakota State University the focus of the conference.

This material is an alloy composed of cobalt, iron, chromium, and aluminum elements, in which a portion of the aluminum element in the structure is replaced by silicon. Currently, researchers are collaborating with the Nanomagnetism Research Group at the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience.
This research has earned Gilbert recognition in fields such as physics, astronomy, and engineering, and has been awarded the Higgs Prize for Outstanding Poster. In addition, he also accepted an invitation to join the prestigious International Society for Science and Engineering.
Computers need to operate in environments with temperatures higher than room temperature, "Gilbert said. Due to the presence of aluminum, this new type of magnetic semiconductor material can maintain its magnetic properties at 450 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 232 ℃). Researchers have found that replacing a small portion of aluminum with silicon can further increase the operating temperature to nearly 1000 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 538 ℃). The development of these two materials was carried out in collaboration with researchers in Nebraska.
