The Mini LED panel has gained favor from Apple, greatly increasing the popularity of this type of panel. DSCC, a research and development institution, estimates that the shipment volume of tablets and laptops equipped with Mini LED will experience a leap forward growth this year, with an increase of 80% and 150% respectively.
9to5Mac reports that the latest report from Display Supply Chain Consultant (DSCC) predicts that Mini LED tablet shipments will jump 80% to 9.7 million units in 2022. The shipment growth of Mini LED laptops is even more astonishing, estimated to be 150% higher than in 2021, reaching 5 million units.
The new iPad Pro and 14/16 inch MacBook Pro released by Apple last year both feature Mini LED panels, marking Apple's first use of this technology. DSCC stated that Apple's embrace of Mini LED is the main reason for the significant increase in shipments of this type of panel this year.
The report states that after smartphones and computers, the next battlefield for LCD and OLED seems to be IT products such as monitors, laptops, and tablets. The MacBook Pro laptop launched by Apple in the fourth quarter of last year will have full annual sales this year, and the Mini LED laptop will have even greater growth. However, the report does not believe that the shipment volume of Mini LED laptops will surpass OLED laptops.
In addition, more tablets will adopt Mini LED this year. It is rumored that Apple's next-generation iPad Pro, both the 11 inch and 12.9-inch versions, will be equipped with Mini LED. The current smaller version of iPad Pro still uses an LCD panel.
The Mini LED market has gained new momentum as Sony unveiled its first Mini LED TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, USA.
The Verge and CNN previously reported that Sony's OLED TVs can be said to be the best in the industry. Both the company and LG Electronics use LG Display (LGD) OLED TV panels, but the product quality is better than LG Electronics. The reason is that Sony has relied on decades of accumulated experience in television hardware to develop its own image processing technology, making Sony OLED TVs perform better.
After mastering OLED technology, Sony is determined to enter the field of Mini LED. Tyler Ishida, President of Sony Consumer Business Group, said that the difference between Mini LED and regular LED panels is that Mini LED has more LEDs, which can improve brightness and image quality. The built-in processor of Mini LED can provide detailed instructions to create the best image quality, making the panel effect more similar to OLED.
