On the specification sheet of single conductive copper foil tape, the surface resistivity is usually marked as ≤ 0.05 Ω/sq, and the shielding effectiveness is 60-90 dB. When sampling incoming materials, a multimeter is used and the copper foil surface is conducting normally. Stick it onto the exposed copper area of the PCB, visually smooth and press it with your fingers, everything looks normal.
But in the EMC test of the whole machine, the radiation stray still exceeds the standard, or the grounding impedance of the shielding cavity significantly increases after high temperature. Upon opening and inspection, the tape was properly applied with no curled edges or bubbles. The problem is not whether it is attached or not, but whether it is electrically connected or not after being attached.
The conductive path of single conductive tape is only one, and it is extremely sensitive to the interface state
The adhesive layer of the double conductive copper foil tape is filled with conductive particles, and the current can vertically pass through the adhesive layer to achieve Z-axis conduction. The vertical resistance is usually controlled within 0.05 Ω· cm ². The adhesive layer of single conductive copper foil tape is insulating, and conduction only occurs at the interface between the copper foil substrate and the conductive surface directly pressed together. The adhesive layer itself does not provide any electrical pathway, it is only responsible for bonding and fixing.
This means that the grounding reliability of single conductive tape relies entirely on the copper foil exposed copper interface as a contact point. The actual effective area, surface cleanliness, compression pressure, and whether the adhesive layer relaxes after long-term use of the contact interface will directly change the resistance of this contact point. Even if the adhesive layer of the double conductive tape has poor local contact, the conductive particle network may still provide a parallel path; Single conductive tape does not have this' backdoor ', and any degradation of the interface is directly reflected as an increase in grounding impedance.
Four typical mechanisms of "false conduction"
The first type is misjudgment caused by the testing method itself
Using the probe tip of a regular multimeter to touch the copper foil surface and exposed copper area, the contact area is only the size of the probe tip, and the measured resistance is often the contact resistance between the probe and the copper foil, rather than the interface resistance between the tape and the PCB. The interface resistance of single conductive tape needs to be measured using a milliohmmeter (four wire method) on the already bonded overlapping surface, rather than using the on/off range of a multimeter to "point" it. A more reliable approach is to measure the DC resistance between the copper foil and the main grounding point of the PCB 24 hours after the adhesive layer reaches a stable bonding strength. Conventional grounding connections require no more than 10 m Ω, and high current discharge paths are recommended to not exceed 5 m Ω.
The second type is insufficient mounting pressure, where the copper foil and exposed copper area are only "placed together" rather than "pressed together"
The conductivity of single conductive tape depends on physical bonding. If only smoothing is done with fingers during manual installation, the actual pressure transmitted to the copper foil exposed interface may be much lower than the minimum effective adhesion pressure required by the tape specification. In engineering practice, it is recommended to use a silicone roller to roll back and forth with a pressure of 20-30 N instead of smoothing it all at once. In the application of shielding inner lining or partial shielding of FPC, if the tape is not rolled or mechanically compressed after pasting, the actual contact area between copper foil and exposed copper area may only be a small part of the visual area, and the contact resistance is much higher than the design expectation.
The third type is the insulation layer formed by surface residues, which is more difficult to detect than air gaps
If there are slight oil stains, flux residues, or oxide layers in the exposed copper area of the PCB, these substances will be sandwiched between the copper foil and the copper surface after compression, forming a very thin insulation film. Visually, the tape is tightly adhered, but the electrical interface is separated by this layer of film. The engineering requirement is to wipe with a dust-free cloth dipped in isopropanol and completely dry before installation, otherwise the residual insulation material will significantly increase the contact resistance, causing "seemingly firmly attached but actually grounded and suspended". Single conductive tape does not have conductive particles to "pierce" this layer of residue, so its sensitivity to this issue is higher than that of double conductive tape.
The fourth type is the creep of the adhesive layer after temperature cycling, which causes the interface pressure to relax over time
The adhesion of single adhesive tape relies on the continuous bonding pressure of pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is recommended that the long-term use temperature of conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives should not exceed 80 ℃; High temperature modified acrylic adhesive can adapt to short-term heating at 120-150 ℃. If the mounting position is close to the power pad or heating element, the adhesive layer will soften or creep during temperature cycling, the contact pressure between the copper foil and the exposed copper area will decrease, the equivalent air gap will increase, and the contact resistance will rise. This process will not be exposed during initial testing, but it will manifest as ground impedance drift after the entire machine has been in service for a period of time.
The following table summarizes the four mechanisms and corresponding engineering criteria for "false conduction" of single conductive copper foil tape:
Why single conductive tape is still irreplaceable: the "selective" value of insulating adhesive layer
The single conductive tape has only one conductive interface, which may seem like a disadvantage, but in specific scenarios, it is precisely its engineering advantage.
In PCB single point grounding, the area covered by the adhesive surface may contain non grounded traces, test points, or solder pads. The insulation layer of the single conductive tape will not form unexpected electrical paths in these areas, and grounding only occurs at the position where the copper foil contacts the reserved exposed copper area. If double conductive tape is mistakenly used here, the conductive particles in the adhesive layer may form multi-point short circuits through non grounded wiring or test points, which may introduce the risk of short circuits. The "selective conduction" of single conductive tape is a protective mechanism here, rather than a performance defect.
In the modules that need to be repaired, the insulation surface of the single conductive tape has an additional advantage: the design with a smaller bonding area or a peelable adhesive layer makes the tape easier to peel off, reducing damage to the FPC and solder pads during repair. This feature has practical value in R&D prototypes or high-value modules that require multiple disassembly and assembly.
Selection and verification judgment based on the "conduction criterion"
Firstly, define the electrical criterion for "grounding" and then discuss the material parameters
Do not use "whether the multimeter rings or not" as the conductivity standard. At the project selection stage, it should be clear what the maximum allowable contact resistance of the target grounding point is (conventional ≤ 10 m Ω, high current path ≤ 5 m Ω), and under what conditions it should be measured (24 hours after installation and after the adhesive layer stabilizes). The surface resistivity provided by the supplier is an intrinsic parameter of the material, not a guaranteed value for interface contact resistance.
Secondly, incorporate the installation process into the selection evaluation, rather than assuming that 'once it is installed, it will work'
The conductivity of single adhesive tape is sensitive to mounting pressure, surface cleanliness, and rolling method. If the production line only does manual pasting without rolling process, or the pasting surface cannot be guaranteed to be clean, the interface resistance dispersion of single conductive tape will be significantly higher than that of double conductive tape. In this case, when selecting, the supplier should be required to provide installation process suggestions and conduct batch sampling of contact resistance according to actual production line conditions during the sample stage, rather than relying solely on incoming inspection data.
Thirdly, in high-temperature or long-life scenarios, the "temperature resistance level of the adhesive layer" and "contact resistance after high-temperature storage" are used as independent verification items
The long-term use temperature limit of conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives is about 80 ℃. If the mounting position is close to a heat source or requires reflow soldering, high-temperature modified acrylic adhesive (short-term tolerance of 120-150 ℃) should be selected. When selecting, the supplier should be required to provide contact resistance change data after high-temperature storage, or at least retest after completing temperature cycling in the sample stage, to confirm that the adhesive layer creep has not relaxed the interface pressure to the extent of conduction failure.
