Reliability verification gap of thin absorbing wave plate: How much absorption performance remains after thermal cycling and bending fatigue

Time:2026-10-10Number:175

The specification sheet for thin wave absorbing plates usually provides the reflection loss curve at room temperature, dry, and without experiencing mechanical stress. But engineers face another set of conditions in actual assembly and use: bending when attaching to curved shells, thermal shock during reflow soldering, temperature cycling during equipment operation, and moisture erosion during long-term use.

These conditions have a relatively mild effect on thick absorbing plates, but for thin absorbing plates compressed to 0.1-0.5 mm thickness, each thermal cycle or bending accumulates micro damage inside the material. The problem is that the consequences of these damages may not immediately manifest - the initial reflection loss may still "look normal", but the impedance matching window has shifted and the absorption performance has decreased silently.

Thermal cycle: Why does the thermal conductivity network fail before the absorption performance

In high power density scenarios such as 5G communication base stations and new energy vehicle electronic control systems, thin absorbing plates often serve the dual functions of electromagnetic wave loss and heat transfer simultaneously. This type of product can meet the standards for thermal conductivity and absorption performance in the initial stage, but after hundreds of thermal cycles, the thermal resistance value significantly increases and the absorption efficiency decreases significantly.

The root cause of failure lies in the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient between the filling particles and the polymer matrix. The thermal expansion coefficient of polymer matrix is usually in the range of 100-300 ppm/° C, while the thermal expansion coefficient of absorbing fillers (carbonyl iron powder, sheet-like FeSiAl, ferrite) is in the range of 5-15 ppm/° C. The difference between the two is more than an order of magnitude. During the thermal cycling process, the amplitude of matrix expansion and contraction is much greater than that of filler particles, resulting in periodic shear stress at the particle matrix interface. After hundreds of cycles, the interface debonding and microcracks expand from local to continuous networks, the thermal conduction path is cut off, and the absorption efficiency decreases due to the loose structure.

Thin wave absorbing plates face more severe thermal cycling challenges than thick products. Thickness compression means an increase in the interfacial area per unit volume, more areas of thermal stress concentration, and a reduction in the volume of the matrix that can be used to disperse stress. Some low-quality products may also produce precipitates in high temperature and high humidity environments, contaminating PCB board pins and posing a risk of short circuits.

Bending fatigue: Can porous structures withstand 10000 deformations

Thin wave absorbing plates need to be attached to curved surfaces or withstand repeated bending in wearable devices and foldable screen terminals. The stress state introduced by bending is more complex than thermal cycling: the outer side of the bending is subjected to tension, the inner side is subjected to compression, and the distribution of conductive networks and magnetic fillers inside the material changes accordingly.

Continuous conductive networks are prone to microcracks, increased square resistance, and impedance matching window shift under tensile strain. If the material adopts a graded porous structure or fiber lap network, stretching is more manifested as the opening and closing of pores and the redistribution of contact points, rather than irreversible fracture. A study on flexible electromagnetic shielding films showed that the material maintained a total shielding effectiveness of 23.6 dB after 10000 mechanical bending cycles, with minimal attenuation amplitude. The porous structure disperses stress, allowing flexible absorbing materials to maintain good absorbing performance even after repeated deformation.

But the protective effect of porous structures has boundaries. If the bending radius is too small or the number of cycles exceeds the design expectation, microcracks will still inevitably cut off the conductive network, reducing electromagnetic attenuation capability. When selecting, it is necessary to confirm with the supplier not only the "number of bending times", but also the reflection loss data after bending at a specific bending radius.

Damp heat aging: an underestimated long-term reliability variable

The resin matrix in thin wave absorbing plates may release small molecule volatiles during long-term use. These volatiles, when accumulated in a sealed chamber, may not only corrode adjacent precision components but also alter the electromagnetic parameters of the material itself. After being stored in a humid and hot environment at 85 ° C/85% RH for 500 hours, the return loss of the absorbing material may undergo significant changes.

The requirements for volatile compounds in aerospace grade material standards can be used as a reference. According to ASTM E595 standard, products with total mass loss (TML) controlled below 1% and condensable volatile matter (CVCM) controlled below 0.1% have extremely low long-term volatile matter release levels. The TML and water absorption rate of some thin absorption plates can be controlled at around 0.04%, which is an important reference for evaluating reliability for base station RF units and vehicle electronic devices that require long-term continuous operation.

Reliability verification framework in selection

For thin wave absorbing plates, only focusing on the reflection loss and thermal conductivity at room temperature is no longer sufficient to evaluate their performance under actual operating conditions. The validation data of the following three dimensions can help engineers distinguish the reliability level of products from different suppliers.

Firstly, the thermal resistance and absorption performance retention after thermal cycling

Require suppliers to provide thermal resistance data and reflection loss data after at least 500 thermal cycles (-40 ° C to 125 ° C), and compare them with the initial values. Materials with a thermal resistance retention rate of over 80% have stable interface bonding during thermal cycling; If it is less than 70%, it means that the thermal conduction path has undergone significant degradation. For thin wave absorbing plates that also serve the function of heat dissipation, the stability of thermal resistance is more important than the initial value.

Secondly, cyclic performance data under specific bending radii

One time attachment to a fixed surface and repeated bending assembly are two different stress modes. When selecting, it should be confirmed that the reflection loss of the material remains at the minimum curvature radius of the actual mounting surface after more than 1000 bending cycles. If the supplier can only provide the nominal value of "bending resistance 100000 times" and cannot provide the electromagnetic parameter data after bending, their reliability data can only be used as a qualitative reference.

Thirdly, the release of volatile compounds and performance drift after wet heat aging

For applications such as in vehicle electronics and base station equipment that require long-term continuous operation, suppliers should be required to provide aging test data under 85 ° C/85% RH conditions, including TML and CVCM values, as well as the rate of change in reflection loss after aging. If the material shows significant performance drift or surface precipitates after aging, it indicates that the curing degree or moisture resistance of the matrix resin is insufficient.

Advanced Institute (Shenzhen) Technology Co., LtdThe research platinum brand XJY series electromagnetic wave suppression absorbing plate has established a standardized testing process for reliability verification, which can provide performance retention data after thermal cycling, wet heat aging, and bending cycles.

The product covers a customizable frequency range of 10 MHz to 40 GHz, with a thickness range of 0.05-3 mm, with ultra-thin models ranging from 0.05-0.3 mm. It has a temperature resistance range of -40 ° C to 150 ° C, a flame retardant rating of UL94 V-0, and supports multiple backing options for acrylic, silicone, and thermal conductive adhesives. This series adopts gradient impedance matching and porous structure technology, and can customize parameters according to specific frequency bands, spatial constraints, and reliability requirements.
